RII’s target market is the domestic (United States and Canada) and/or foreign (all Countries other than the United States and Canada) filmmaker or content visionary with proven expertise whose film, multi-media or television content fosters a greater appreciation of cultural diversity by depicting positive role models and realistic portrayals of minorities or disenfranchised foreign cultures in society. The term “independent” refers to a film, multi-media or television project that is not financed by a major studio or network. While RII’s emphasis is primarily qualified film prospects, other content formats for the Internet, multi-media or television will also be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Specific criteria for the qualified filmmaker to meet includes, but is not limited to:
- The filmmaker must have produced a minimum of one critically acclaimed or financially successful film or form of media content.
- The film or media content’s production budget must be in the range of $500,000 to $2,500,000.
- For filmmakers applying for production loans, a pre-sales contract from a qualified sales agent or distributor for the amount of the loan and interest must exist. For filmmakers applying for RII’s advisory services and grants pre-sales are not required.
- The film or media content must have the following qualities:
- The theme must focus on the experience of a minority or group of minorities (e.g., African-American, Asians, Hispanics/Latinos, Native Americans, gays or lesbians, a religious group, or women) or other disenfranchised foreign culture.
- The film or content must contain a minimum of one positive role model of diversity in a starring or predominant role.
- The film or content must show a realistic portrayal of a minority(ies) or a disenfranchised foreign culture in a positive light.
- The film or content can be of any genre with the exception of erotic thrillers, pornography; films rated NC-17 or any film or content whose storyline exhibits gratuitous sex and violence without plot content synergy.
